Chain link has a reputation as purely utilitarian, but it's the right answer for a lot of properties: dog runs, pool construction sites, ranch perimeters, commercial yards, and anywhere you need a secure line without a big budget.
Start with the finish. Galvanized chain link is the classic silver look and holds up for decades. Black vinyl-coated chain link costs a bit more but disappears into landscaping and looks far more finished from the street.
Then choose the height and bottom treatment. A bottom rail or tension wire keeps dogs from pushing under, and taller fabric suits commercial security.
If you want privacy, add slats. Woven slats turn an open chain link fence into a screen that blocks views and dust, and they come in several colors. It's one of the most cost-effective privacy solutions available.
